Emma Raducanu Opens Up About Emotional Loss at US Open 2024 to Sofia Kenin: ‘Feeling Blue and Dejected’

Emma Raducanu expressed her feelings of disappointment and sadness after her defeat to Sofia Kenin in the first round of the 2024 US Open. Raducanu, who had high hopes for the tournament, was unable to secure a victory, losing in three sets at Flushing Meadows. Despite the loss, the 21-year-old is looking ahead to her next tournament at the Korea Open next month.

Raducanu was visibly upset after her early exit from the US Open at the hands of Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion. The Brit, who made history as the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam in 2021, had opted to skip the Olympics in order to focus on her preparation for this event.

Reflecting on her defeat and the challenges she has faced to return to full fitness this season, Raducanu admitted, “I feel down, I feel sad. Obviously, this is a tournament I really want to do well in so… after the first set I was outplayed completely and I think I did well to equal it. I came across a very in-form opponent, and she played really well.”

During the match, Raducanu and Kenin exchanged breaks early in the second set, with the Brit managing to take control and secure the set with another break. However, a missed opportunity to go up 2-0 in the decider proved costly as she surrendered her own serve in the fifth game.

Despite the loss, Raducanu remains focused on her upcoming tournament and is determined to bounce back. Tennis fans can stay tuned to watch and stream the 2024 Laver Cup live on Eurosport and discovery+.
