In her third-round US Open match, Iga Swiatek had a straightforward 6-4 6-2 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Following the match, the world No. 1 credited Serena Williams for inspiring her performance.
“It was nice that she approached me because I wouldn’t, for sure, find courage,” Swiatek said of the conversation she had with Williams before the match.
Swiatek’s dominant victory allowed her to advance to the fourth round of the tournament as she aims to reclaim the Flushing Meadows crown.
Reflecting on her encounter with Williams, Swiatek shared, “She has a lot of positive energy. It’s nice that she came on-site and was chatting with the players. Even though we met before, she’s still star-striking for me.”
Despite her success, Swiatek acknowledged that there are areas of her game that still need improvement. “It’s not like my tennis is perfect. I feel I need to work on some stuff,” she admitted.
During the match, Swiatek showcased her skills with an impressive backspinning return that left Pavlyuchenkova stunned. “I would be giving too much credit to myself if I said I had control over it,” Swiatek humbly remarked.
