Novak Djokovic matched Roger Federer’s 89 wins at the US Open by beating Moldova’s Radu Albot in straight sets in the first round. The Serbian, coming off his Olympic gold victory, secured a 6-2 6-2 6-4 win in the tournament’s first night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. A victory in the US Open would give Djokovic his 25th Grand Slam title and break the all-time record.
Djokovic’s title defense at the US Open began with a commanding win over Moldovan qualifier Radu Albot, which also tied him with Roger Federer for the most wins at Flushing Meadows.
“I wasn’t aware of it, to be honest. It’s the biggest stadium, definitely the loudest we have in the history of our sport,” Djokovic said during his on-court interview after the match.
Headlining the first night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Djokovic faced no difficulties against Albot as he pursued his 25th Grand Slam title.
“The night sessions are the best in the world on Arthur Ashe and ever since the roof was introduced it became even louder. Electric atmosphere. Incredible energy. I wanted to kickstart the tournament in the right way, and I think I did,” Djokovic added.
This year marked the first time since 2017 that Djokovic entered the US Open without winning any of the first three Grand Slam events. Despite a loss in the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic bounced back to claim the gold medal in Paris.
As a four-time US Open champion, Djokovic is determined to capture the title once again and become the first man since Federer in 2008 to successfully defend it.
Even with 40 unforced errors during the match, Djokovic achieved his objective in his first match since winning the gold medal.
