Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas closely observed Carlos Alcaraz during the Laver Cup last week, where the Spaniard led Team Europe to a thrilling come-from-behind victory. Alcaraz’s win in the decisive match against Taylor Fritz sealed the tie 13-11, inspiring Tsitsipas to express his desire to “follow in his footsteps.”

“I’m observing Carlos, it’s like, seeing him from that angle is so different to just watching him on TV or any other type of competition – I don’t really get to get so close and intimate with another high-tier player as him. He’s currently one of the best players in the world, won two Grand Slam titles this year, and for me he’s an example. I really want to follow in his footsteps,” Tsitsipas said in an interview with the ATP.

Tsitsipas admitted that playing alongside Alcaraz at the Laver Cup was a motivating experience for him. Alcaraz’s flashy style of play and impressive performances on the court garnered admiration from fans and fellow players alike.

Alcaraz’s nickname ‘Fed 05’ was given to him by Team World, drawing comparisons to Roger Federer’s dominant 2005 season. The young Spaniard’s standout performance at the Laver Cup included a crucial victory over Taylor Fritz in the final match.

Despite his success at the Laver Cup, Alcaraz’s only setback in the competition came in a doubles match alongside Alexander Zverev. Nevertheless, his impact on Team Europe and his ability to inspire players like Tsitsipas did not go unnoticed.

As for Tsitsipas, the Greek player has been a two-time Grand Slam finalist but has yet to secure a major title. His victory at the Monte Carlo Masters earlier this year marked a bright spot in an otherwise inconsistent season, which included a surprising early exit at the US Open.

Looking ahead, Tsitsipas aims to channel Alcaraz’s energy and success on the court as he continues to pursue his own Grand Slam dreams. The Laver Cup experience served as a valuable lesson for Tsitsipas, who sees Alcaraz as a role model for his future in tennis.
